Broward County Students Don't Like New Safety Rules © 2018 Phillip Evans

There is an old adage, be careful what you wish for. Want a statist solution? Get a statist solution. Seems like schools have heard the kids' protests and have DONE SOMETHING, because always, something must be done, right?

Broward County Schools in Florida now has a new district-wide policy for students. Only clear backpacks are allowed (provided free by the schools), and they must wear an ID badge at all times.

I have to agree that the policy, even though statist, is not that terribly bad. It certainly does not place any undue burden on the students.

These are just commonsense rules (like background checks to purchase a gun and a license to carry), right?

After all, you can't hide a gun very well in a clear backpack. That seems reasonable to me, but many students do not agree. They feel that if guns could only be banned, then no one could sneak in a gun (there are millions of them after all) using a normal, opaque backpack.

Their comments are rather chucklesome:

One complained, "Spending money on giving us clear backpacks is a joke." Does she not know that money spent to save their lives is well worth it?

Another groaned, "Clear backpacks don't do anything except make us look stupid." Doesn't she want to see if someone has anything bad in their backpack? And if everyone has to look stupid, then no one can get singled out and ridiculed, right?

And my favorite gripe, "also clear backpacks are a mistake because now if someone asks for a pencil i HAVE to give it to them. they’ll see right through my bag and my lies. gross"

Apparently, getting your pencil back with icky germs is far worse than getting shot by a student with a gun that can easily be smuggled in a concealment backpack.

One student ironically quipped, "This is absolutely ridiculous at this point like schools are slowly but surely becoming prisons (I am aware most schools in primarily high crime rate areas look like prisons) but school is supposed to be a place to learn and feel comfortable."

Hmmm, they don't want teachers to be armed in schools, but putting lots more police in schools is good. Just what do they think an armed police presence will do to their environment? Make it look like a police state, perhaps? But that's what they wish for, to be safe, right?

Apparently though, not an ANY cost. Those icky, clear backpacks and ID badges! Hahaha!

They should probably appeal to their leader, David Hogg, and tell him to turn the volume down a little. He keeps it up and no telling what other inconveniences the students might have to endure.

You know, if you needed a gun to protect yourself and your family from rapists and murderers, but didn't have one because it was banned, that would be an inconvenience.
